Müller wurde 1956 in Köln geboren und verließ Deutschland im Alter von 18 Jahren, um mehrere Jahre in Paris und Südamerika zu leben. Zurück Köln holte sie ihr Abitur nach und studierte später Anthropologie, Germanistik und Romanistik an der Universität Bonn und an der Universidad Nacional del Altiplano in Puno, Peru.Als Anthropologin forschte sie in Bolivien über den traditionellen Kokakonsum der Aymara-Indianer und über die Sozialisation indigener Kinder am Titicacasee, Themen, denen sie später als Journalistin nachging. Sie veröffentlichte einen autobiografischen Roman über das Reisen in Südamerika in analogen und digitalen Zeiten (Comeback mit Backpack, Piper Verlag). Seit 1994 arbeitet sie als Filmemacherin und Autorin. Für ihre Spielfilme, Filme und Dokumentationen erhielt sie zahlreiche Auszeichnungen.Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem bewegten Bild und seinen Grenzen markiert den Beginn ihrer künstlerischen Praxis. Heute lebt und arbeitet sie als bildende Künstlerin in Berlin. Born 1956 in Cologne, Müller left Germany at the age of 18 and lived for several years in Paris and in South America. Back in Cologne, she caught up on her high school diploma and later studied Anthropology, German and Romance studies at the University of Bonn and at the Universidad Nacional del Altiplano in Puno, Peru.
As an Anthropologist, she conducted research in Bolivia on the traditional use of coca among the Aymara Indians and on the socialization of indigenous children at Lake Titicaca, topics she later pursued as a journalist. She published an autobiographical novel about traveling in South America in analog and digital times (Comeback mit Backpack, Piper Verlag). Since 1994, she has worked as a filmmaker and author. She has received numerous awards for her features, films and documentaries.
The exploration of the moving image and its limits marks the beginning of her artistic practice. Today she lives and works as a visual artist in Berlin.

Meine abstrakten Acrylbilder sind visuelle Gedichte, inspiriert von der Natur und meiner Biografie. Jedes neue Werk erlebe ich als spannende Reise in unbekanntes Terrain. Es ist ein Versuch, das Unbenannte sichtbar zu machen und – im nächsten Schritt – Worte dafür zu finden. Einige meiner Bilder werden von Gedichten begleitet. Ich male auf kleinen und mittelgroßen Leinwänden, bleibe neugierig und experimentierfreudig, trage intuitiv Farbschichten auf und spiele mit Formen. Wo ich Farbe durch Kratzen, Reiben oder Schleifen entferne, gebe ich der Vergangenheit Raum. Auf diese Weise treten die Schichten in eine Beziehung zueinander, so wie ich in einen Dialog mit Farben und Erinnerungen trete und auf neue Verbindungen reagiere. Mich interessiert die Erforschung des Augenblicks: Wie muss die Vergangenheit in der Gegenwart ausgesetzt werden, damit Neues entstehen kann? In meiner Malerei geht es vor allem um Gefühle, ausgedrückt in Farben und Formen, um die Kontraste und Widersprüche, die ja auch das Leben ausmachen. Auf diese Weise findet die Komplexität meiner Wahrnehmung und Biografie Ausdruck. Die Kunst hilft mir, das zu verstehen und weiterzuverfolgen, was ich als Anthropologin und Filmemacherin liebe: meine Komfortzone zu verlassen, Risiken einzugehen, fremde Kulturen und Landschaften zu entdecken, um neue Perspektiven zu gewinnen. All dies in vollem Bewusstsein für den flüchtigen Moment und seine Magie.My abstract acrylic paintings are biographical visual poems inspired by nature. I experience each new work as an exciting journey into unknown territory. It is an attempt to make the nameless visible and – in the next step – find words for it. Some of my paintings are followed by poems.
I paint on small and medium grounds, remaining curious and experimental, intuitively applying layers of colour and playing with shapes. Where I remove paint by scratching, rubbing, sanding, I give space to the past. In this way, the layers enter into a relationship with each other, just as I enter into a dialog with colors and memories and react to new connections. I am interested in exploring the moment: How must the past be suspended in the present so that the new can emerge?
My painting is above all about feelings, expressed in colours and forms, about the contrasts and contradictions, which indeed also make up life. In this way the complexity of my perception and biography finds expression.
Art helps me to understand and further pursue what I love as an anthropologist and filmmaker: leaving my comfort zone, taking risks, discovering foreign cultures and landscapes to gain new perspectives. All this, in full awareness of the fleeting moment and its magic.
